Lv 11:13
¶“‘These you shall detest among the birds flying creatures;[a] they shall not be eaten,[b] they are an abomination: the eagle, and the vulture ossifrage, and the black vulture osprey,
———
a Gk. πετεινός, flying, vs. πτερωτός, winged.
b Leviticus doesn't explicitly permit the eating of clean birds, but Deuteronomy does. Dt. 14:11 permits the eating of clean birds (ὄρνεον καθαρόν) and Dt. 14:20 permits the eating of clean flying things (πετεινὸν καθαρόν). Clean flying things only includes birds since bats and flying insects are explicitly unclean in Dt. 14:18, 19 and Lv. 11:19. Clean birds are not defined; rather both Dt. and Lv. give examples of unclean birds.
