Rv 18:21
And one mighty powerful angel took up lifted a stone like a great millstone and cast threw (it) into the sea, saying, “Thus with violence will Babylon, the great city, be thrown down with a surge,[a,b] and rest assured she will not still be found no more at all.[c]
———
a Gk. ὅρμημα. Used in Ps. 45(46):5 LXX of the flowings of a river. Here, an angel is throwing an enormous millstone into the sea, creating a surge. BDAG says, violent rush, onset...Babylon will be thrown down with violence. LSJ says, of the fall of a stone, Apoc.18.21, but also says, θαλάσσης -ήματα, of the tides.
b Cf. Ez. 26:19: For this is what the sovereign Lord says: When I make you [Tyre] desolate like the uninhabited cities, when I bring up the deep over you and the surging waters overwhelm you [LXX: καὶ κατακαλύψῃ σε ὕδωρ πολύ, and great waters shall cover thee (Brenton)] (NET); also Jer. 51:63-64. : 51:63 When you finish reading this scroll aloud, tie a stone to it and throw it into the middle of the Euphrates River. 51:64 Then say, In the same way Babylon will sink and never rise again because of the judgments I am ready to bring upon her... (NET).
c See Is. 26:21: I will bring terrors on you, and you will be no more! Though you are sought after, you will never be found again, declares the sovereign Lord (NET).
