A renewed outlook or mindset. The law made us aware of sin, it condemned sin, and yet we continue to sin. So under the "oldness of the letter" (the old way of thinking under the law) we live under the weight of knowing that we are hopelessly condemned; but having now had that condemnation commuted we have reason to do good.
