Rom 1:17
For in it is revealed God’s righteousness[a] is revealed (to be) from by faith, to for (the purpose of) faith.[b] As it is written, “But the righteous shall live by faith.” [Hb. 2:4][c]*
———
a God's righteousness. See Mt. 6:33: But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness... (ESV). See also Rom. 3:21-22: But now the righteousness of God has been manifested [πεφανέρωται] apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it— 22 the righteousness of God through faith in [of] Jesus Christ... (ESV).
b Gk. ἐκ πίστεως εἰς πίστιν, lit., out of faith into faith. Various translations, from faith for faith (ESV), from faith to faith (KJV, NIV, NASB, NET). Righteousness is revealed to be by faith (ἐκ πίστεως), in order that you might have faith (εἰς πίστιν, for the purpose of faith; cf. εἰς σωτηρίαν, for salvation, 1:16). For as it is written, the righteous shall live by faith (ἐκ πίστεως).
c Hb. 2:4 LXX: ὁ δὲ δίκαιος ἐκ πίστεώς μου ζήσεται [but the just shall live by my faith (Brenton)]. See also Gal. 3:11, Heb. 10:37-38.
