a Gk. ἐσκυλμένοι, having been wearied (N, R-P.), or ἐκλελυμένοι, having given up (t.r.). Variously translated fainted (KJV), troubled (NAB), distressed (NAS), bewildered (NET), and harassed (NIV, NJB, NRSV, REB, WEB).
b Gk. ἐρριμμένοι, having been tossed or flung. Might also have the sense here of having been dumped, cast-off, or abandoned, and therefore of being uncared-for or unattended-to. Variously translated scattered (KJV, WEB), abandoned (NAB), dispirited (NAS), helpless (NET, NIV, NRSV, REB), and dejected (NJB).
