Mt 5:13
“You are the salt of the earth,[a] but if the salt has lost were to ever lose its flavor,[b] with what will it (the earth) be salted seasoned?[c] It is then good for nothing, but to be cast out and trodden under the feet of men.
———
a See 2 Kgs. 2:20-22, where salt is a healing agent: He [Elisha] said, Bring me a new bowl, and put salt in it. So they brought it to him. (21) Then he went to the spring of water and threw salt in it and said, Thus says the Lord, I have healed this water; from now on neither death nor miscarriage shall come from it. (22) So the water has been healed to this day, according to the word that Elisha spoke (ESV).
b Gk. μωρανθῇ, lit. be made or become stupid.
c Gk. ἐν τίνι ἁλισθήσεται, lit., with what will (it) be salted? Cf. Lk 14:34 which has almost the same wording [ἐν τίνι ἀτυρθήσεται, with what will (it) be seasoned?], but where it has no direct referent. (It here, likewise, could therefore be indefinite instead of specifically referring to the earth.)
