μάγος/μάγοι
, Latin magus/magi, are probably court astronomers. The only other occurances of this word in the New Testament outside of Mt. 2 are in Acts 13:6 and 8. In the LXX this word only appears in Daniel, in connection with the court of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon. (Traditionally, the magi are identified as three
kings
named Melchior, Caspar, and Balthazar, one for each of the three gifts in Mt. 2:11, and respectively representing either Persia, India, and Arabia; or Europe, Arabia, and Africa.)
b
By specifying the magi as
from the east,
Matthew may be identifying them as from a particular, well-known and respected Eastern school of magi, placing them possibly in Babylon when they saw the star. (Source:

see Isaiah 60:6 Herds of camel will cover you, camels of Madiam and Gaipha, all out of Saba they will come bringing gold and frankincense and they will announce the the salvation of The Lord. (LXX)
