Mt 12:23
All the multitudes crowds were amazed astounded,[a] and said, “Can this be the son of David?”
———
a Gr. ἐξίστημι. Lit. the crowds were outside themselves (ecstatic). In the parallel account in Mk 3:21—which lacks this specific exorcism—ἐξίστημι is used to describe not the crowd, but Jesus as being deranged/out of his mind. In Lk 11:14, this verb, referring to the crowd again, is changed to θαυμάζω, to marvel. For examples of ἐξίστημι and θαυμάζω used in conjunction, see Mk 6:51 and Acts 2:7.
