b Gk. πρώτη ἐγένετο ἡγεμονεύοντος τῆς Συρίας Κυρηνίου, happened first of (that is, prior to) Quirinus' hegemoning of Syria (see explanation). This census, which occurred at the time of Jesus' birth and therefore during the reign of Herod the Great (see Mt. 2:1, 15, 19, 22 and Lk. 1:5), who died in 4 BCE, is being differentiated from the Census of Quirinius (referenced in Acts 5:37), which occurred in 6 CE at the start of Quirinius' appointment as Legate of Syria after Augustus Caesar deposed Herod the Great's son Herod Archelaus for misrule (4 BCE-6 CE).
