Jn 19:23
¶Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took his garments and made four parts, to every soldier a part; and also the coat. Now the coat was without seam, woven from the topª throughout.
———
a the word here is ανωθεω anothen "from above" which often means "from God" (John 3:3, 7,31; James 1:17, 3:15, 3:17).. a "tunic" from God is an interesting cross over to the law of first mention for the word χιτωνας which refers to the tunics made by God for Adam and Eve in Genesis 3:22. Although this John 19:23 reference is often translated as "from top to bottom" (see ESV, Mounce, NET, NIV) that is very specifically NOT what the Koine literally says here: when "top to bottom" is specified, as in the ripping of the veil in two, as in Mt 27:51/ Mk 15:38, we see the words "απο ανωθεν εως κατω" from top to bottom, which specifcally includes εως κατω "unto the bottom", not included in John 19:23. Jesus also lays the ground work for hearing the double entendre in His reference in John 19:11 where He tells Pilate "you would have no power against me unless it was given to you from above" ανωθεν. This is simply an interesting observation of a linguistic construct (double entendre) that could be used to reason how the tunics of Adam & Eve and Jesus are made by God/ woven from above.
