Jas 4:5
Or do you think that discredit[a] the Scripture which says in vain, “The Spirit who lives spirit which resides[b] in us yearns jealously longs[c] toward envy”?[d, e]
———
a Gr. δοκεῖτε ὅτι κενῶς, lit. do you think that emptily (in vain) i.e., Or do you think that the Scripture says emptily (in vain)....
b RP reads κατῴκησεν (κατοικέω): The spirit which took up residence in us. NA/UBS reads κατῴκισεν (κατοικίζω): The spirit which he domiciled in us.
c Gr. ἐπιποθέω.
d Gr. φθόνος [greed? ill will? bad things?]. That is, our human nature is predisposed toward ungodliness.
e Per the NET Bible: No OT verse is worded exactly this way. This is either a statement about the general teaching of scripture or a quotation from an ancient translation of the Hebrew text that no longer exists today.
