Heb 9:1
¶Now indeed even the first* (covenant) had was having[a] ordinances of divine service ritual, and an earthly sanctuary the sacred earthly (thing).[b]
———
a What is the importance of the imperfect here (why not present or aorist)?
b Gk. τό τε ἅγιον κοσμικόν. Κοσμικόν is being assumed here to be substantive with ἅγιον being attributive, referring to the tabernacle and all its items as listed in 9:2-4—what LXX Ex. 39:21 calls the instruments of the work of the tabernacle of witness (τὰ ἐργαλεῖα τὰ εἰς τὰ ἔργα τῆς σκηνῆς τοῦ μαρτυρίου)—which were sanctified and made holy by anointing oil (see Ex. 30:26-29, 40:9-11). Most translations, however, assume ἅγιον to be substantive and κοσμικόν predicative, that is, the holy (place) [meaning sanctuary, referring to both rooms of the tabernacle as a whole] (is) earthly (but which seems an unnecessary non-sequitur). The neu. sg. τό ἅγιον in 9:1 seemingly does not mean the Holy (Place), specifically referring to the first room of the tabernacle, what Heb. 9:2 calls the first tabernacle. Although the LXX (Ex. 26:33) calls the two holy places of the tabernacle mas. or neu. sg. τοῦ ἁγίου and τοῦ ἁγίου τῶν ἁγίων, Heb 9:2-3 calls them fem. sg. ἥτις λέγεται ἅγια and ἡ λεγομένη ἅγια ἁγίων in gender agreement with ἡ σκηνή.
