a Gk. εἰ for Hb. אִם ʾim, if, is a Hebraism expressing an emphatic 'no' (both here and Mk. 8:12). It is an elliptical negative oath, the full form of which is [Some curse upon me] if they will enter into my rest, meaning they will not enter into my rest.
