Heb 11:13
These all died in faith, not having received the promises,[a] but having seen* them and embraced them from afar, and having confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims[b] on the earth land[c] (of the promise).
———
a Of possession of the land and innumerable descendents. Gn. 15:7-18: 15:7 The Lord said to him, I am the Lord who brought you out from Ur of the Chaldeans to give you this land to possess. 15:8 But Abram said, O sovereign Lord, by what can I know that I am to possess it?...15:18 That day the Lord made a covenant with Abram: To your descendants I give this land... (NET). Gn. 15:16: In the fourth generation your descendants will return here... (NET). See also Acts 7:5.
b Gk. ξένοι καὶ παρεπίδημοί. Gn. 23:3: Then Abraham got up from mourning his dead wife and said to the sons of Heth, 23:4 I am a temporary settler [LXX: πάροικος καὶ παρεπίδημος] among you. Grant me ownership of a burial site among you so that I may bury my dead (NET). Gn. 15:13: Then the Lord said to Abram, Know for certain that your descendants will be strangers [LXX: πάροικον] in a foreign country [LXX: γῇ οὐκ ἰδίᾳ, a land not their own]. They will be enslaved and oppressed for four hundred years (NET). Gn. 28:4 (note Heb. 11:20a): ...the land where you have been living as a temporary resident... (NET).
c Gk. γῆ, land or earth. This is being assumed here to refer back to γῆ in 11:9. Most translations, though, read on the earth.
