Eph 5:16
redeeming using the time purposefully,[a] because the days are evil.[b]
———
a Gk. ἐξαγοραζόμενοι τὸν καιρόν, lit., redeeming (gaining possession of) the time (see also Col. 4:5). The meaning is open to interpretation. Cf. Dn. 2:8 (Brenton LXX): The king answered, I know with certainty that you are stalling for time [καιρὸν ὑμεῖς ἐξαγοραζέτε], because you see the thing is forgotten by me, i.e., buying time [ἀγοράζω]. Zerwick: The meaning of the mid. [voice] is doubtful, perh. exploiting the opportunity.
b Perhaps, the days are fleeting? Taking πονηρός to mean adverse rather than evil, i.e., time is against you/not in your favor/short? On the one hand ref. Gal. 1:4: this present evil age; but for other senses of πονηρός, see Mt. 25:26 and Lk. 19:22 (useless); Jas. 2:4 (corrupted); and Rv 16:2 (grievous).
