Gk.
ἐν ἡσυχίᾳ
, in quiet. This is not silence (
σιγῆς
), but probably the respect one gives and the quiet one keeps when a teacher is teaching. Cf. Acts 21:23-22:2, when Paul began to address the rioting crowd in Hebrew and they quieted down (
μᾶλλον παρέσχον ἡσυχίαν
) to let him speak. Here Paul is apparently opening a door to women to learn that wasn't opened to the before. By qualifying it with
in quiet
and
in all subjection,
he appears to be concerned with teaching them the rules of learning, that they learn under the same rules that men do, or at least how he probably did under Gamaliel (Acts 22:3).
