then we who are alive,[a] who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air. So we will be with the Lord forever.

a See note 1:10. This expection of Jesus returning in their lifetimes raises the question about those who don't live to see it. Paul assures them that they will be resurrected, just as Jesus was himself, ahead of even those who are alive. Death will not keep them from this event for which they have changed their lives in expectation of being a part of.
