who his own “himself bore our sins[a] in[b] his body upon the tree, in order that we, having died upon dying to the sins, might live to the righteousness; of him who “by his stripes you were healed.[c]
———
a Is 53:4 LXX: Οὖτος τὰς ἁμαρτίας ἡμῶν φέρει....
b Why is this ἐν and not ἐπί? (It reads as though Jesus is the sins [or perhaps the hands of Aaron] and the cross is the scapegoat.)
c Is 53:5 LXX: ...τῷ μώλωπι αὐτοῦ ἡμεῖς ἰάθημεν. Healed would appear to mean having whatever satisfaction or atonement is required for sins and rebellious deeds be made, here by substitutionary punishment: But he lifted up our illnesses, / he carried our pain; / even though we thought he was being punished, / attacked by God, and afflicted for something he had done. / He was wounded because of our rebellious deeds, / crushed because of our sins; / he endured punishment that made us well; / because of his wounds we have been healed (Is 53:4-5 NET). (In a not-quite-the-same way, on the annual Day of Atonement [Lv 16:1-34] a scapegoat—in addition to blood sacrifices—bears away all the sins of the people into the wilderness: Aaron is to lay his two hands on the head of the live goat and confess over it all the iniquities of the Israelites and all their transgressions in regard to all their sins.... The goat is to bear on itself all their iniquities [Καὶ λήψεται ὁ χίμαρος ἐφ’ ἑαυτῷ τὰς ἀδικίας αὐτῶν (LXX)] into an inaccessible land, so he is to send the goat away in the wilderness [Lv 16:21-22 NET].)
