·
1Pt 1:7
in order that the proof of your faith, which is should be found more precious than gold,[a] that perishes even though it is tested which is refined[b] by fire when being tested, may be found to result into praise, glory, and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ[c]
———
a Gr. χρυσίον, tech. a thing made from gold, vs. χρυσός, gold, though there appears to be no real distinction between the two in actual usage.
b Gr. ἁπόλλυμι, to destroy. That is, gold, when being tested, is really put through the wringer. Gold was tested for purity by melting [or just heating?] in fire and observing its color. (Pure gold would retain its color; silver would make it whiter; copper or tin rougher and harder; and lead softer and black.) A molded object, such as jewelry, would then in effect be destroyed; not its matter, only its form. Further, according to Pliny, gold is actually made more excellent by the process: Gold is the only metal not depleted by fire.... In fact, it improves in excellence the more often it is fired.
c Lk 17:30 (cf. Mt 24:27,30; Mk 13:26): ...on the day the Son of Man is revealed (NET); 2 Thes 1:7: ...when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with his mighty angels (NET).
