In a legal context, one who speaks on behalf of a defendent in a court of law before a judge. NIV: we have one who speaks to the Father in our defense—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. For those who walk in the light and have fellowship with Jesus (1:3, 7), he represents before God that their sins have been cleansed by his blood (1:7).
