Finding a single-word interlinear translation that covers the semantic range of ἐπηρεάζω is challenging. Eπηρεάζω seems to cover oral as well as physical expressions of contempt, so it's difficult to express both forms of mistreatment with one word. ("Mistreatment" itself tends to connote action much more strongly than verbal expression, making it less than perfect as a gloss.) But since "abuse" can be either verbal or physical, I've settled on that as an acceptable gloss.
Note that of the two NT usages, in Luke 6:28 (and the parallel passage Mt. 5:44, if original there) ἐπηρεάζω seems to connote action, while 1 Pt. 3:16 focuses more on the oral aspect of the verb.
