Sources disagree on whether ῥήσσω and ῥήγνυμι are the same word. On the one hand: They ought still to be seen as variants of the same verb (http://www.ibiblio.org/bgreek/test-archives/html4/1995-09/10571.html). On the other: These are two separate words, with different etymological histories, which just happen to become homographs in Koine (http://www.ibiblio.org/bgreek/test-archives/html4/1995-09/10596.html).

BDAG identifies two distinct ῥήσσω’s: the first is a by-form of ῥήγνυμι, meaning 1 : tear in pieces, break, burst 2 : tear/break/let loose, break out in (see e.g. ῥήσσεσθαι under BDAG s.v. ῥήγνυμι 1) ; the second (BDAG s.v. ῥήσσω) is derived from Attic ῥάττω, meaning thrown down.

In form the two words are identical in the future and aorist, and may be identical in the present (i.e., ῥήγνυμι is ῥήγνυμι; ῥήσσω may be either ῥήσσω [ῥήσσει in Mk 9:18] or ῥήγνυμι [variant ῥήσσει in Mark 2:22].)

The following are ῥήσσώῥάττω:

The following are ῥήγνυμίῥήσσω:
