Jas 1:5
But if any of you lacks is lacking for wisdom,[a] let him ask[b] of from the giving God, who gives (giving) to all liberally readily,[c] and without reproach; not discouraging,[d] and it will be given to him.
———
a Wisdom about testing, faith and endurance, that is, the knowing in 1:3?
b Because σοφίας is gen., it is the object of λειπω, to lack, which takes either a gen. or acc., rather than αἰτέω, to ask, which takes an acc. (i.e., not if any of you is lacking [anything/something], let him ask for wisdom).
c Gr. ἁπλῶς, simply. BDAG: w. διδόναι without reservation. Variously translated generously (ESV, NAB, NAS, NET, NIV, NJB, NRSV); generous (REB); liberally (KJV); liberally and ungrudgingly (AMP); abundantly (DRB).
d Gr. οὐκ/μὴ ὀνειδίζοντος, not (disparaging? scorning? dressing-down?). Variously translated ungrudgingly (NAB, NRSV); without reproach (ESV, NAS); neither grudges nor reproaches (REB); without finding fault (NIV); without reproaching or faultfinding (AMP); without reprimand (NET); without scolding (NJB); upbraideth not (KJV, DRB). The gist is that there is no cause to be nervous, fearful, or hesitant about asking from God.
